CBD oil is the buzzword of the moment, and just about everywhere you look you’ll see CBD oil being incorporated into something, whether it be beauty products or for medicinal use.
CBD oil is available pretty much everywhere, from pharmacies, to health shops, from cosmetic counters to supermarkets.
But, what exactly is CBD oil? And does it really do everything that it claims?
Let’s have a look now at some of the claims.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
What Is CBD Oil?
CBD Oil stands for cannabidiol oil. CBD is derived from the marijuana plant, and is a form of cannabis.
CBD oil is a type of cannabinoid, found naturally in the marijuana plant. Unlike another cannabinoid oil called THC, CBD does not make you ‘high’ or have the psychoactive effects that THC does.
CBD oil has long been associated with marijuana use, which many people frown upon. However, although CBD oil is derived from the marijuana plant, it is not the same as smoking marijuana.
Also, because CBD oil does not contain the THC that other forms of the marijuana plant do, CBD oil is legal in most places now, although if you are thinking of trying CBD, it is always worthwhile checking if it is legal where you live.
Mental illness, and in particular generalized anxiety disorder and clinical depression, are a growing trend all around the world.
The reasons for this increase in mental illness are complex, and there is no single. Many things contribute, including personal circumstances, genetics, the pressures of modern life and the rise of social media, to name just a few.
Regardless of what is causing the anxiety or depression, CBD oil may be able to help.
If you are suffering with any sort of mental health problems, your first port of call should always be your doctor, and they can find the right course of treatment for you, which may include talking therapy or medication, or a combination of the two.
CBD oil can help to, but always tell your doctor you are thinking of trying it, in case it interacts badly with any other medications you are taking.
Research has shown that CBD oil changes the way receptors in the brain react to serotonin. Serotonin is colloquially known as the happy hormone, and people suffering with anxiety and depression orders are often found to have a low uptake of serotonin.
CBD oil seems to help to reduce general stress, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, such as an increased heart rate, help with worsened sleep patterns or insomnia, and help with the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder, along with many others.
Protect The Brain
This is an ongoing study at the moment, so there are no definitive results yet, but researchers are looking into the effects of CBD oil on brain aging and other brain illnesses.
Scientists are looking into whether CBD oil has any beneficial effects on diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis along with other illnesses of the brain.
It is thought that, as CBD oil has anti-inflammatory effects, it could protect against the inflammation that causes areas of the brain and different nerves to make these conditions worsen.
This is an interesting area of study, and it definitely worth keeping an eye on.
CBD oil is probably most well known for helping some people who suffer with seizures. It has been all over the news world wide, as well as being seen across various social media platforms.
This is another area where research is still ongoing, and it is not yet known why CBD oil seems to help some people reduce the frequency of their seizures, whilst not seeming to help others at all.
However, the preliminary research is very positive, and shows that many people are greatly aided by taking CBD oil along with their normal anti-seizure medication.
Some people however, have suffered severe side effects in the study, so if you are thinking of using CBD oil to help with your seizures, always talk to your neurologist first, to check it is safe to do so.
The analgesic, or pain relieving properties, of CBD are another benefit that is widely talked about, and anecdotal evidence seems to show that it is very helpful to some people.
CBD oil has anti-inflammatory properties, as we discussed earlier when talking about diseases of the brain. These anti-inflammatory properties are also what helps to relieve some people of their chronic pain.
Research is being carried out to see how CBD oil can help in a variety of different painful situations including, but not limited to, arthritis, general chronic pain, muscle pains, spinal cord pain and pain from multiple sclerosis.
Does CBD Oil Have Any Side Effects?
Many people think that because CBD oil is a natural product, it does not have any adverse side effects.
This is untrue, and many natural things can be harmful. For example, cyanide is a completely natural chemical found in the seeds of different fruits, but we all know that cyanide is extremely deadly.
Conversely, there is a train of thought that any ‘chemical’ is bad for you. Again, this is not true, and just because something is a chemical, does not mean it isn’t natural. Water is a chemical, it is a mix of two different compounds – oxygen and hydrogen, but it is fairly safe.
So, yes, CBD oil is natural, but there are some side effects to look out for. These include dizziness, lethargy, depression, insomnia, irritability, hallucinations and low blood pressure.
If you are thinking of using CBD oil for any reason, it is a good idea to first discuss this with your doctor. They can go through the pros and cons with you, and determine if it safe for your situation and any medications you may already be taking.
Always make sure you buy your CBD oil from a reputable source, where you know the CBD oil is authentic.
